I visited Rome in 2007 and spent 3 weeks in Italy and here are a few of my tips!

Get the Rick Steves travel book! I highly recommend the Rick Steves' guidebook to Italy. It was so handy that by the end of the trip it had saved us countless hours, and dollars. The book is written and organized so well, that if you were to ask a friend who knew Italy by the back of their hand, they couldn't give you better advice. The book offers suggestions for hotels, restaurants, and attractions. During our stay we had to constantly make decisions about what to visit based on our schedule. The book is extremely helpful in this regard, because it will tell you what to skip (it actually does!). If you have a smartphone go and grab the Italy Audio Tours app for free online and take it with you (mp3s also available).
